Safety guide

Online Dating Safety for the First Conversation

Protect personal information, recognize pressure and money requests, and keep control during the first conversations with someone new online.

The first conversation should reveal compatibility gradually, not require immediate trust. Keep control of what you share, where you communicate, and how quickly the interaction moves.

Keep identifying details private

Avoid sharing your home or work address, daily route, financial information, passwords, verification codes, or documents. A photo can also reveal a street sign, workplace badge, school, or location metadata.

Use the app’s messaging tools while you learn whether the person behaves consistently and respects boundaries.

Notice pressure, not just obvious threats

Warning signs include:

  • pushing you to leave the platform immediately;
  • asking for secrecy;
  • declaring intense feelings unusually fast;
  • refusing reasonable identity checks while requesting yours;
  • creating repeated emergencies;
  • asking for money, gift cards, cryptocurrency, fees, or account access.

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission’s guide to romance scams warns that scammers often build trust and then ask for money. Never send money or financial access to someone you know only through online contact.

Verify without becoming invasive

Look for a consistent story over time. A brief live video call can help before an in-person meeting, but it is not proof of character or safety. Do not perform harassment, publish someone’s information, or demand sensitive documents.

Plan a safer first meeting

Meet in a public place, arrange your own transportation, tell a trusted person the plan, and keep your phone available. Leave whenever you feel uncomfortable. Consent to meet does not imply consent to physical contact or a second meeting.

Use platform controls

Block and report harassment, impersonation, financial solicitation, or threatening behavior. Preserve relevant messages or screenshots when you may need to report fraud or danger to the platform or authorities.

No app can verify every person or prevent every harmful interaction. iCupid gives people a way to begin direct conversations, while each user still needs to protect personal information and respect the other person’s boundaries.
